Poem # 108 Life Lessons

Being just, in an unjust world, doesn’t get you anywhere,
Here everyone has their agenda, they simply do not care;
Your real standards set, are viewed askew and deemed unfair,
None else wears your moral hat but you, their intent only to get squared.

Being empathetic, in an unfeeling world, doesn’t get you anywhere
Here everyone has their priorities, try change it, if you dare;
Your kindness and benevolence, viewed as weakness, is a quality that’s rare,
Solitary you will be, when you allow yourself to feel for others or shed a tear.

Being honest, in a world of guile, doesn’t get you anywhere,
Here everyone lives a life of lie, if you stay truthful beware;
Your sincere and candid words, are viewed as blunt and bare,
To take your side and support you, good luck finding a partner to pair.

Be fair, be kind, be true and be you, wear all your virtues with flair,
No matter how everyone else lives, it’s you who has to prepare;
When your time here has ended, and you are asked how you fared,
Unjust, unkind and deceit, are heavy burdens, you don’t want to bear!
