Poem # 102 Indian Marriage: Part 2: The Perfect Bride

Grooms want a bride, who looks fair,
As a man brought up in rich Indian culture;
Mutated definition through age and time,
What initially meant just, is now mere skin color.

Your mothers' list includes “from good family”,
An educated bride, who can do chores for her son;
Grand social status, strict-no to anomaly,
Flexible, obey her rules and cater to everyone.

As your mom voices, her needs so distinct,
Your father, may be a silent partaker;
Traditional, rich and sweet, make his list succinct,
As he says, his small essentials are “not major”.

Then comes your sibling, who is trying to figure,
Where you stand, on being ready to commit;
If you are really geared, for the lifelong merger,
Their prerequisites are, someone fun loving and with grit!

If the criteria, were not already extensive enough,
You bring in, your friends to the pool;
For friends can be, disparaging and tough,
Being rejected by the gang, can be cruel.

When someone scores, on the above criteria,
You then look, to match charts in astrology;
Heavens forbid, if there is mismatch in this area,
Your marriage is positively headed for cacophony.

If the above list hasn’t got her cowed,
There is that important meet, with all your kin;
Should the bride or her family, have a voice that was loud,
It will be viewed, as an unforgivable sin.

Once this big meet is done,
The modern families let you date;
You both establish, if together you can have fun,
And if your ideas match, and leave the rest to fate!
