Poem # 134 The Love that almost was......

I was in conversation with a friend, when I first heard your voice,
Crisp, clear, with lots of bass, magnetic, soft, yet, I could hear it over any noise;
You towered over my 4 inch heels, as if the broad span of your shoulders wasn’t enough,
Willfully I turned away to ignore you, and heard in my ear, your light cough.

You introduced yourself, announcing that you were my debate partner,
“Is cloning tampering with laws of nature”, you chose to veto, while I agreed in friendly banter;
I was dumbstruck each time you spoke, my ears waiting to hear you more,
Rare for me, as I was usually, the one who turned rooms into speechless adore.

You were kind, tall, dark and handsome, to add to it you were wise,
The girls swooning that your glasses, added to the depth in your eyes;
I came in all enthusiastic, with my ideas for the debate,
Waving my arms to get my point across, your nodded assent was great!

Our ruse was to add a twist in our speech, Sanskrit verses to match,
One verse would add conviction to the thought, while the other supported the nought;
Painstakingly we practiced, to match our dictions and rate of speech,
The first prize was the catch we needed, to cinch our teams worth in the street.

The final year student eyed us with envy, his eyes too on the slice,
His partner lacked his charm and mettle, making his team too weak to win the prize;
He came to you asking us to split, to make me his partner for this round,
You grudgingly agreed, as you felt he needed his last chance at the crown.

Next he tried to convince me, and I fought hard for our team,
When you asked me with your deep voice, how could I not agree;
Your selfless act to help him win, raised respect for you in my eyes,
Half heartedly I rendered the speech, helping him win the first prize!

From then on we spent some time together, our likes and ideas matched,
Sparky debates to win over the other, when there was a random thought mismatch;
As the days passed by I had a feeling, in time I may fall hard for you,
It was a terrible blow when I realized, that you were another's beau.

I chose to distance, lest I break my heart,
For I did not want melodrama, or to break you both apart;
Bonded with your girl friend, to ensure I never crossed the line,
Coz loyalty and friendship are life values, viewed as top in mine.

We both moved on with our lives, you made her your partner and soul-mate,
I was happy, for the happiness you both found, entwining your fates;
When I am nostalgic and think, of the golden days of my past,
I fondly remember you, as you remain, the love that almost was!
